GUAM Organization History
GUAM was established in Kyiv, Ukraine, on 10 October 1997, initially as the GUAM alliance, named after the initials of its member states. Uzbekistan joined the organization in 1999 but later withdrew in 2005. The organization was rebranded as GUAM Organization for Democracy and Economic Development during the Yalta summit in 2006, focusing more on the promotion of democratic values and the enhancement of economic cooperation.
GUAM Organization Structure
The structure of the GUAM Organization is maintained by several key bodies, including:
- The Council of Heads of State: The supreme decision-making body that convenes once a year.
- The Council of Foreign Ministers: Coordinates the policies and activities of the organization and ensures the implementation of decisions made by the Council of Heads of State.
- The Committee of National Coordinators: Responsible for the current operational activities and preparation of meetings of the Council of Heads of State and the Council of Foreign Ministers.
- The Secretariat: Responsible for organizational, informational, analytical, and consultative support for the activities of the organization.
