History of the Jordanian Flag

The flag of Jordan, officially adopted on April 16, 1928, is a powerful symbol of the country’s history, culture, and political ideals. It is based on the flag of the Arab Revolt against the Ottoman Empire during World War I. The flag consists of three horizontal bands of black, white, and green representing the Abbasid, Umayyad, and Fatimid Caliphates, respectively, which were major Islamic caliphates in history. The red chevron on the hoist side represents the Hashemite dynasty, the ruling family in Jordan, and the Great Arab Revolt.

The flag also features a seven-pointed star, added to the design in 1928. Each point of the star stands for one of the verses of the opening surah in the Quran, Al-Fatiha, and collectively they represent faith in one God, humanity, national spirit, humility, social justice, virtue, and aspirations.

Jordan’s flag has remained unchanged since its adoption, symbolizing a constant in the nation’s tumultuous history. It represents not only the sovereignty and independence of Jordan but also its rich Islamic heritage and the unity of Arab peoples. The flag is a source of pride for Jordanians and is a prominent symbol in both national and international contexts.

The colors and symbols of the Jordanian flag have deep historical and cultural significance. They reflect the country’s roots in the Great Arab Revolt, the Islamic Golden Age, and the Hashemite leadership’s role in shaping modern Jordan. The flag is a visual representation of Jordan’s identity, uniting past and present, and its ongoing journey as a nation.
