Mozambique National Anthem

Pátria Amada (Beloved Homeland)

In the memory of Africa and the World,
Beautiful fatherland of those that dared to fight,
Mozambique, your name is freedom,
The Sun of June forever will shine.
Mozambique, our Glorious Land,
Rock, sweat and gunpowder in your hands,
With revolutionary zeal and labor,
You are the tomb of imperialism.

History of the Mozambique Flag

The national flag of Mozambique, adopted on May 1, 1983, is one of the most distinctive flags in the world due to its symbolism and colors. The flag consists of three stripes of green, black, and yellow separated by white fimbriations, with a red triangle at the hoist bearing a yellow star, a crossed hoe and rifle, and an open book.

The colors of the flag hold significant meaning. Green symbolizes the rich land, black represents the African continent, yellow stands for the country’s minerals, and red symbolizes the struggle for independence. The red triangle is a reminder of the struggle against colonialism. The symbols on the flag are equally symbolic: the star represents Marxism and internationalism, the book signifies education, the hoe represents the country’s agriculture, and the rifle symbolizes defense and vigilance.

The current flag is based on the flag of the Mozambique Liberation Front (FRELIMO), which led the country to independence from Portugal in 1975. Mozambique’s flag is unique as it is the only national flag in the world to feature a modern rifle. The inclusion of the AK-47 rifle with a bayonet signifies the nation’s persistent struggle and vigilance in defense of its freedom.

The flag of Mozambique is a powerful symbol of the nation’s history, its struggles for freedom, and its commitment to maintaining its sovereignty. It reflects the values and aspirations of the Mozambican people and their journey from a colonial past to an independent future. The flag is prominently displayed in public buildings, at national events, and in international contexts, representing the pride and unity of Mozambique.
