The Southern African Development Community (SADC) is a regional economic community founded and committed to regional integration and poverty eradication within Southern Africa through economic development and ensuring peace and security. It aims to enhance the standard of living and quality of life, freedom, and social justice, and peace and security for the peoples of Southern Africa.
Southern African Development Community History
SADC was established in 1992, succeeding the Coordination Conference (SADCC), which had been formed in 1980 among nine countries in Southern Africa. SADCC was primarily focused on reducing dependence on apartheid South Africa; however, with the end of apartheid and the transformation of the global and regional economic environment, it was necessary to transform the organization. SADC was thus formed to broaden cooperation, enhance integration, and leverage the region’s own resources for sustainable development.
Southern African Development Community Structure
SADC’s structure is designed to facilitate cooperation and ensure effective implementation of regional strategies and policies. Key bodies of the SADC include:
- The Summit of Heads of State or Government, which is the supreme policy-making institution of the SADC.
- The Council of Ministers, which oversees the functioning and development of the SADC and ensures that policies are implemented.
- The SADC National Committees (SNCs), which coordinate SADC programs at the national level.
- The Secretariat, which is the principal executive institution of the SADC, responsible for strategic planning, facilitation, and coordination and management of all SADC programs.

Membership in the SADC is primarily for Southern African countries. The member states are committed to regional integration to improve the living standards and quality of life of the peoples of the region through increased regional integration and cooperation.
