Zimbabwean National Anthem

Blessed be the Land of Zimbabwe

O lift high the banner, the flag of Zimbabwe
The symbol of freedom proclaiming victory;

From Zambezi to Limpopo,
May leaders be exemplary.

History of the Zimbabwean Flag

The flag of Zimbabwe was adopted on April 18, 1980. It features seven equal horizontal stripes of green, yellow, red, black, red, yellow, and green. At the hoist is a white triangle, edged in black, bearing a red five-pointed star with a Zimbabwe Bird in yellow.

The green symbolizes the agriculture and rural areas of Zimbabwe, the yellow represents the wealth of minerals in the country, red stands for the blood shed during the liberation struggle, and black represents the heritage, race, and ethnicity of the black majority. The white triangle stands for peace, and the red star represents the nation’s aspirations. The Zimbabwe Bird is a national emblem, symbolizing the history of Zimbabwe from the ruins of Great Zimbabwe, where it was found.

The flag’s design was a result of a nationwide competition, post-independence, and it signifies the unity and identity of Zimbabwe. The transition to this flag marked Zimbabwe’s transformation from colonial Rhodesia. Over the years, the flag has become a symbol of pride, unity, and the country’s rich history. It reflects both the struggles of the past and the hopes for a prosperous, peaceful future.
